Cluster (2020) is Silvan Joray’s first album as a leader. After playing some of this music live with his trio for more than two years, he decided to document this first period of work and record his debut album. Originally coming from playing straight- ahead jazz, he developed his compositions and playing towards a more modern and open approach over the past years.The order of tunes on the album is very carefully chosen to keep the listeners attention throughout. Every composition is opening up a quite specific world but at the same time allowing the musicians to deal very freely with the given material. There is a golden thread going all the way through that makes «Cluster» a piece of art as a whole instead of just a collection of tunes.

«Silvan’s voice is very much his own. His music has become modern and open, and I already feel that there are some strong atmospheric, specific moments on this album. I think we made a really strong record together. […] In the title song “Cluster Song” there is a certain atmosphere and a certain way he wrote the melody and the chords that really struck me then. When I heard that song I knew that Silvan has arrived in that group of creators, people who are not just recreating the masters that have been here before, but actually creating new things for themselves. Some people who play the instrument well are happy with playing well and playing the existing language. And others keep searching for their own musical universe.» |
